To open the gates all WoW servers had to complete specific quests and turn in a large amount of items to be used as war materials. Only a few of the very high end guilds could complete the very long quest line, but anyone on the server could collect the millions in materials, like linen bandages, that needed to be turned in. Our server was doing a great job of sucking badly when compared to the other servers that were all ranked on the WoW website. One day I talked to the council about how pathetic it was that our server was literally standing still in many ways. Almost nobody was willing to do anything, guilds wouldnt help each other, and we were going nowhere.
We organized the guild into collecting the remaining materials to complete that end of the process. There was one guild on the horde side and two guilds on the alliance side really trying to complete the quest line, but only Oinland on the alliance side was really putting any effort into things. They were also running into the same problem as us on the horde side, only worse. The alliance side was far behind the horde side in collecting materials for the war effort and Oinland wasnt having any luck getting help from other alliance guilds.
I contacted them one day out of game and offered to get the KoA to start collecting for the alliance. The guild did an amazing job of collecting a massive amount of stuff very quickly and we used the neutral auction house to get it all over to Oinland. We both worked together to get the everything completed and planned far ahead of time when to actually open the gates of Ahn'Qiraj.
Once the quests were completed the final step was to click on a gong in front of Ahn'Qiraj which would start the server event. Only KoA and Oinland knew when exactly this was going to happen, but of course people came out of nowhere when we appeared in Silithus one day near Ahn'Qiraj and everyone else just saw a horde and alliance guild both there in numbers not attacking each other.
By the time Oinland clicked on the gong the framerate was already creeping along due to the enormous amount of people showing up as fast as possible and once the gong was clicked giant Colossal warbringers spawned everywhere and began raping the hell out of everyone around them, which was also even more fun because it was already hard to move.
We stayed outside fighting all the event bosses for about 30 minutes or so. The bosses gave a extreme amount of reputation so it was worth it to kill them, but the lag was just too much so after a while Oinland and KoA decided to go into the instance itself instead of trying to deal with the unplayable crap outside.
